Privacy Policy
How we handle your data (spoiler: we barely collect any)
The Short Version
This website uses Google Analytics to understand how many people visit and which pages are popular. That's it. No email collection, no tracking pixels, no marketing nonsense.
What We Collect (and Why)
In the spirit of being completely transparent about a project that champions transparency, here's the honest truth:
I really, really wanted to use a privacy-focused analytics tool. Something like Plausible or a self-hosted solution that respects your privacy completely. And I still might! But Google Analytics is just... so good. The data is comprehensive, the interface is familiar, and it helps me understand whether anyone actually uses this thing I built.
So yes, this site uses Google Analytics. Here's what that means:
What Google Analytics Collects:
- Which pages you visit – So I know if anyone reads the docs
- How long you stay – Helps me understand if the content is useful
- Where you came from – Did you find this via search, GitHub, or somewhere else?
- Your approximate location – Country/city level, not your exact address
- Device and browser info – So I can make sure the site works for everyone
- Your IP address – Google anonymizes this automatically
What We DON'T Collect
- Email addresses (we don't even have a newsletter)
- Personal information
- Login credentials (this is a static website)
- Credit card details (everything is free)
- Anything from the FreeITSM application itself (that's entirely self-hosted on your own infrastructure)
Cookies
Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish unique visitors and sessions. These are the technical bits that make analytics work. When you accepted the cookie banner, you agreed to these being set.
If you change your mind, you can:
- Clear your browser cookies and don't accept the banner again
- Use a browser extension like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger
- Enable "Do Not Track" in your browser settings
- Use Google's own Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
Third Parties
The only third party involved is Google (via Google Analytics). Your data is processed according to Google's Privacy Policy.
We don't sell data, share data, or do anything creepy with data because we barely have any data to begin with.
Your Rights
Under GDPR and similar privacy laws, you have the right to:
- Know what data we collect – You just read it above
- Access your data – It's anonymous, so there's nothing personal to access
- Delete your data – Clear your cookies and stop visiting
- Opt out – Don't accept the cookie banner, or use the tools mentioned above
Updates to This Policy
If anything changes (like if I finally switch to a privacy-focused analytics tool), I'll update this page. The website is open source on GitHub, so you can literally see every change in the commit history.
Questions?
This is a passion project with no formal support, but if you have concerns about privacy, feel free to open an issue on GitHub.
Remember: This privacy policy is for the freeitsm.co.uk website only. The FreeITSM application itself (the ITSM software) is self-hosted by you, on your infrastructure, with your data. I never see, access, or collect any data from your FreeITSM installation. That's entirely yours.
